Scene
1
It is mid-afternoon
in spring, on the porch of a house in a thick, urban neighborhood
with all the rudiments of
decay and bitterness of
a post-industrial New England city.
The door to the house slowly
opens. A young man, JACK, peers his head out the door. He looks
up the street and down the street, and then
cautiously emerges to the exterior. He looks across the street
to the house opposite of him. He is holding a brown paper-bagged
bottle.
Jack
puts his hands in his pocket and walks over to the other side
of the street.
He sits on the stoop, lights a cigarette, and with
calm contemplation, seems to melt into the scenery of the neighborhood.
His drifting gaze finally focuses on something as he prematurely
flicks his cigarette.
